For two decades, "You're Beautiful" has been played at weddings and other romantic occasions. Now singer James Blunt is revealing some unromantic details about his biggest hit.
Twenty years after the release of his hit song "You're Beautiful," James Blunt reveals who the supposed love song is about. On his X-account, he shares shocking details to mark the anniversary of his iconic song.
On May 30, 2005, "You're Beautiful" stormed the charts. To mark the anniversary, the British artist opened up on social media about what the lyrics of "You're Beautiful" really mean. In a video showing the 55-year-old in a cozy living room, he says to the camera, wearing an unbuttoned gray polo shirt: "20 years ago today, I released a song that bought me this house. Who would have thought a song about being high as a dragon on drugs and stalking someone else's girlfriend would resonate so much? Thank you. You are beautiful!"
"It's actually a bit scary"For a long time, Blunt remained silent about who the romantic lyrics were specifically about. After the song's release, there were rumors that it might be about casting director Dixie Chassay. The singer provided initial information about the song's origins in an earlier essay for "The Guardian" about six years ago.
"One day I was on the London subway and saw an ex-girlfriend with her new boyfriend. Our eyes met, but we just walked past each other, and I went home and wrote the words to 'You're Beautiful' in two minutes," he wrote. The singer further demolishes any romantic connection to the lyrics: "It's always been portrayed as romantic, but it's actually a bit creepy: It's about a guy (me) who's high and stalking someone else's girlfriend on the subway. But everyone has those moments when you wonder, 'What if I had said something?'"
"You're Beautiful" was the third single from Blunt's album "Back to Bedlam," released in October 2004. In September 2014, Blunt married Sofia Wellesley, the granddaughter of Arthur Wellesley, 8th Duke of Wellington. The couple have two sons.
